About Me

“Recognizing the need is the primary condition for design.”
Charles Eames

I was drawing dinosaurs with orange trees growing out of their backs at the tender age of four. Seeing inch marks being used in the place of quotation marks sends a chill down my spine. I get a secret thrill out of explaining the etymology of “kern” and “leading” to non-designers. If I could teach the world one thing it would be... to love one another.

Well, that took a sharp, 90-degree turn, didn’t it?

Hi, I’m Allison. I have a background in theatre, history and music, but now, I’m a visual communicator (AKA a designer) with over 10 years of experience in the field, mostly in the nonprofit sector. I see myself as a listener, researcher, problem-solver and technician. I believe creativity is only as strong as fulfilling the needs of an audience and trusting in the vision and insight of the client, whoever they may be. While I do have experience as a freelancer and have worked at agencies, my true passion is supporting the mission of nonprofits as an in-house creative director, designer and marketing/communications professional.

In my current role, I have:

  • maintained brand consistency on a wide range of marketing and communications collateral

  • creative directed direct mail campaigns and advertising campaigns (print and digital)

  • provided art direction for websites and videos

  • contributed to the overall marketing strategy as a senior employee in a full-service, in-house marketing and communications department

  • served as the de facto production designer for anything and everything under the sun

  • mentored young creatives by providing feedback on portfolios, resumes and cover letters

I’m open to new design opportunities that will primarily utilize my art direction and creative direction skills, particularly in the field of nonprofit marketing.

Wow! You’re still reading? 😳

Well, since you asked… in my spare time, I enjoy doing puzzles, seeing live music, listening to podcasts, and writing fiction as a NaNoWriMo participant. Currently, I’m working on a short story that has mutated into a novella and that may end up being the first thing I have ever completed! I also try to travel on a regular basis. My most recent trips include Iceland, the Grand Canyon, the Smoky Mountains and Cambodia. My current travel wish list includes Scotland, Peru, Morocco and Hawaii but, to be honest, I’ll go just about anywhere!

Okay, I’m done. Have a nice day. 😊
